Performance Improvement Intervention
University of Wisconsin-Stout Art Department
Problem Summary: Students applying to the Art and Design Department in graphic design, interior design, and game design are required to submit a portfolio. The current portfolio submission is via email as digital files and post to provide a printed version. The portfolio process could benefit by a streamlined electronic submission system.
Background of Organization:
  • An Art Education degree is offered in 1964. In 1966 Stout offers a new Bachelor's degree in Art.
  • The Art and Design Department is formally housed in the Applied Arts Building built in 1972. Micheels Hall was dedicated in 1996 and included an art gallery, computer lab and classrooms.
  • Young adults wishing to pursue a Bachelor's degree in the arts interested in graphic design, interior design, and game design will be served by the Art and Design Department and the portfolio submission process.
  • A breakdown of portfolios submissions by program would be useful. Perhaps an impact survey of faculty and students who have used the current system may be valuable.
  • The Art and Design Department Web site -- http://www.uwstout.edu/artdes/
  • The department has a public relations committee that I can contact, and the university has a PR department that may offer some insight into the working of the department. There are various reports generated that include enrollment and graduation that are open access.

Stakeholders and Decision Makers
  • Student Applicants, Faculty and Staff will benefit by a streamline system for portfolio submission.
  • The department Program Director is responsible for assessment and admission, and the department Chair is responsible for recruiting. Both would play a part in the advancement of this plan. Aside from that however, funding is approved through the Chancellor and the state budgets are continually being cut at this time.
  • Former Chairs and others involved in the portfolio submission program can provide the best insight into the performance problem involved in the portfolio submission program.

Stakeholders Include:
Ron Verdon, Department Chair

Susan Hunt, Former Chair

Tamara Brantmier, Program Director
